More than 2.7 million Medicare beneficiaries in Mississippi rely on durable medical and assistive equipment and devices that require electricity to live independently in their homes. In the event of an emergency, such as inclement weather or a prolonged power outage, these individuals may be at risk. To help protect them, the HHS EmPower map provides up-to-date information on the total number of Medicare beneficiaries who are at risk of electricity loss in a given geographical area. The map allows users to select different geographies and download the results of the selected data to inform public health activities for emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.
Additionally, users can access layers of data on natural hazards in near real time to anticipate and address the needs of community members at risk in the event of an emergency. For more information, work aids are available in the upper right corner of the map. Hovering over the attributes or selecting them will display Medicare data for a state, county or counties or zip codes within a state, as well as data on natural hazards. The selected Medicare data can then be downloaded from the table below.
